Disabling the God-Awful "Emergency Alerts" on a Samsung Galaxy S2

I've had my Galaxy S2 for well over a year now, and until yesterday I had never even heard of an "emergency alert" on a phone. I was focused on something when suddenly the silence was pierced by my phone screaming at me and a message popping up about an AMBER Alert.

Google Assists Me In Eradicating Internet Explorer

When I am elected President, the very first order of business on the agenda, to be established by Executive Order within 30 minutes of taking office, is to make ownership and/or use of Internet Explorer a crime, carrying a mandatory death sentence on the first offense. IE is one of the (if not *the*) biggest steaming piles of crap to ever make it to mass production. IE is, by my estimation, the single-most cause of web developer headaches on the planet.

Rant: Sometimes Third-Party Software Pisses Me Off

Third-party software can be a great addition to your toolbox. A few great examples of that would be ColdBox, Transfer, and ColdSpring. The aforementioned are my personal favorites, since I use them together to quickly build very rich applications that would take me an eternity to build without them.

It took me years to be willing to even use third-party software because I was not the one in control. (There's also the point of wanting to build things myself for the sake of learning, but that's an entirely different topic.) Over the course of the last two-ish years, I have actually enjoyed the benefits of someone else's labor, and I am most appreciative of those who have authored and/or contributed to great projects like ColdBox, Transfer, ColdSpring and others. However, this week I ran into a perfect example of why (on occasion) third-party software really pisses me off.

Everyone is *NOT* a Star

Okay, so it's the end of the school year and most schools either have hosted or are about to host their End-of-the-Year Awards Ceremony. This is a great opportunity to recognize the outstanding achievements of their students for the school year. Tonight was the Junior High Awards Ceremony for our school district.

When I was a kid these awards ceremonies were pretty cool, and truly focused on students that went above and beyond the call of duty and really did special things. But apparently here in the 21st century things are different; so different, in fact, that if you showed up to school at least once during the year and were breathing, you're a "Star"! WTF?!?!?!

I Love Gmail But...

I truly love Gmail, especially for lists, but there's one thing that just annoys the living hell out of me:

Why is it that some items won't show up for hours and hours, and yet the timestamp on them is older than other items that appear first?

The same thing happens with Google Groups. Here's a fine example:

Timestamps out of order

It just really peeves me, for a variety of reasons, but in this particular case it just makes me look like I ignored responses to my question. Grrrrrrrrr!!!!!!
